VIDEO VIEW: Action Man Action Team

Action Man!

Whilst kids in the US grew up with GI Joe, us Brits had Action Man, his licensed ''cousin.'' Although originally straight copies, UK-based Palitoy quickly began to introduce their own toys and innovations to the originals. Those bendy hands and ''real'' hair? They were Action Man features before GI Joe got his Kung Fu Grip on them, thanks to Palitoy's boffins.

This ad shows Action Man toward the end of his run, when war toys were out and quasi-superheroics were in. As well as featuring the Atomic Man (their answer to the popular Six Million Dollar Man toys and show) and Bulletman (their leotard-clad superhero), the ad also features Tom Stone, the first black Action Man and one of the earliest to use the Dynamic Physique model (complete with grafted-on underwear.)

Watch for how the Intruder is presented to be in-scale with the 12'' dolls. I owned one and always found him too short. Maybe he was originally to be part of the Super Joe 8'' figures, as he certainly seemed more in-scale with that size of figure. Also worthy of note is the Capture Copter, with a front-mounted capture claw that's recently been paid homage to in the Mantis Attack Craft.
