NEWS: Caroline John - 1940 - 2012


Former Doctor Who actor Caroline John has passed away, aged 72.

Caroline John was probably best known for her role as Third Doctor Jon Pertwee's first companion, Dr. Elizabeth Shaw. Introduced along with Pertwee in the 1970 adventure, Spearhead from Space. Ms John portrayed the astrophysicist for the remainder of Pertwee's first season until her off-screen departure following her last adventure, Inferno.

A phantom Liz Shaw appeared in the 1983 anniversary special, The Five Doctors before returning to the Whoniverse in the 1990s direct-to-video spin-off series, PROBE and, more recently, the Big Finish Productions audio stories.

Outside of Doctor Who, Caroline John was an accomplished stage actor and also appeared in numerous television shows, including Poirot, The Choir and the TV adaptation of The Woman in Black.

She is survived by her husband Geoffrey Beevers and their three children.
