5... 4... 3... 2... 1... Thunderbirds are GO!
For those unfamiliar with the awesomeness that was Thunderbirds, the show was centred around the adventures of International Rescue, a secret, privately-funded organisation whose goal was to use advanced technology and know-how whenever disaster struck. Plane with stuck landing gear? Caved-in mineshaft? Collapsing building? All in a day's work for International Rescue.
Known for its use of puppets (and live-action for close-up hand sequences), memorable characters and - best of all -superb vehicle designs (created by SFX legend Derek Meddings), Thunderbirds spawned a number of spin-off toys. Metal vehicles, models, play sets and even Takara got in on the action, releasing Scott and Virgil Microman toys.
An attempt was made in 2004 to bring the show to the big screen and the result was the terrible Thunderbirds, helmed by Jonathan ''Beard'' Frakes. Like many TV-to-movie adaptations of the time, it was more parody than tribute and - worst of all - featured a bunch of teenagers rescuing ''the Thunderbirds.'' Ugh.
Thankfully the show's creator, Gerry Anderson, is in discussions to revive Thunderbirds with a treatment similar to that seen in 2005's Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons reboot. No dates have been given yet on this update but we'll certainly keep you posted.
