NEWS: Marvel To Adapt John Carter of Mars

The Great-Granddaddy of science-fantasy, A Princess of Mars is set to get the Marvel treatment later this year.

Working with the estate of Edgar Rice Borroughs, Marvel plans to bring the adventures of the former Confederate soldier-turned-fantasy hero to a new audience with their comicbook adaptations of the seminal novel. Interestingly, the comicbooks are being described as ''canon'' to the John Carter series, which implies there may be some changes or even new adventures in this new medium.

A Princess of Mars - the first of the John Carter of Mars series - was originally published in 1912 and tells the tale of John Carter, a former soldier and prospector who finds himself transported to the planet Mars, a world of warlike races and strange technologies. The book is a prime example of pulp sci-fi, yet despite its humble origins its impact and influence are still felt to this day.

John Carter: A Princess of Mars Issue #1 (of 5) goes on sale in September. Until then you can read more at Marvel.com.

  1. Now this could get me to go buy some comic books again.

  2. It could be interesting but I'm not sure if the stories aren't a little simplistic but also drawn-out. The books do feature huge swathes of text about Barsoom's technology.
