I can understand that when the original Star Wars trilogy was made, despite having some cutting-edge effects and brilliant visualisers working on them there would always be scenes that didn't live-up to what George Lucas had envisaged. Whilst I don't agree with it, I can understand that he may want to go back and fix scenes he thinks look dated now due to the limited effects available at the time.
However, the latest changes being made for the Blu-Ray release of the movies strike me as simply being George Lucas either trying to squeeze yet another edition out for die-hard fans who can't live without every version or Lucas simply being a petulant child and doing it to piss of people.
BECAUSE HE CAN.
What changes you may ask? Well, according to The Mary Sue, the new editions of Star Wars (and no, it's not ''A New Hope'' - it's ''Star Wars'' and it always will be), The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi feature a number of ''improvements'' Lucas has ''added'' to ''enrich'' the experience, including blinking Ewoks (because I specifically remember critics at the time being appalled by that oversight), Ben Kenobi's Krayt Dragon howl now sounding like he's being violated with a spoon and - perhaps most laughably - Darth Vader's Revenge of the Sith ''NooOOOOooo!'' making an appearance during the climactic battle in Return of the Jedi.
Lucas's refusal to release the original versions of the movies is simply petulance. I understand they're his creations and he can do whatever he likes with them. But for those of us who were electrified and inspired by the original releases we saw as children, it's simply a slap in the face not to see our beloved movies as they were. Re-cut, re-edit and add as many new scenes and effects as you like to your movies, Mr Lucas but also give us the option to watch them as they were. It's not too late.
After all, isn't the whole point of the original trilogy that those who are lost to darkness can find it within themselves to do the right thing and - by doing so - redeem all their past mistakes?
I hate Lucas i really do.
ReplyDeleteI really don't get why he doesn't just release the regular, original editions alongside his ''improved'' versions. That way he gets two bites of the cherry: the fans get to see his definitive version (which he can piss about with to his heart's content) and those of us who saw the movies at the cinema when they first came out get to see the versions we grew-up watching.
