Benedict Cumberbatch and Noel Clarke have both joined the cast of the upcoming sequel to 2009's Star Trek reboot.
Cumberbatch - currently lighting-up screens in the UK with his portrayal of The Great Detective in the Mark Gattiss/Stephen Moffat-created Sherlock - joins the cast in what's being described by Deadline as a ''lead role,'' a part that Variety's Jeff Sneider states is ''the villain.''
Rumours that J.J. Abrams is planning to re-make Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan continue to circulate, so whether Cumberbatch - currently filming the dual roles of Smaug and The Necromancer in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit - will be playing that role or if Abrams has other plans remain to be seen.
In related news, former Doctor Who companion and BAFTA award-winning actor-writer-director-all-round-good-egg Noel Clarke will also be joining the cast, playing ''a family man with a wife and young daughter,'' according to Variety.
The as-yet untitled sequel to 2009's Star Trek is slated for a 2013 release.
