We're saddened to report the passing this weekend of concept artist and designer, Ralph McQuarrie.
Originally a technical illustrator, McQuarrie was hired in 1975 by film-maker George Lucas to provide concept illustrations for his upcoming movie, The Star Wars. McQuarrie's designs - which featured some of the series' most iconic characters (including Darth Vader, the Stormtroopers, R2-D2, C-3PO, Obi-Wan Kenobi and (later) Boba Fett and Yoda) and landscapes - are said to have been pivotal in persuading Fox to greenlight the project. He remained with Lucas as visual designer for the sequels The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
Other works include ET: the Extra-Terrestrial, Jurassic Park, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Cocoon.
He is survived by his wife, Joan.
