NEWS: Doctor Who Christmas Special 2012 to Feature Unusual Guest Star

The BBC has announced a special - and rather unusual - guest star for the Doctor Who 2012 Christmas Special.

Warning: There may be potential spoilers ahead

Withnail and I star Richard E. Grant will be joining the cast for the Christmas Special, which begins filming today. Grant is described as playing ''the villain'' in the special, which also introduces the Doctor's new companion (tentatively named ''Cora'') played by Jenna-Louise Coleman.

What's interesting about Grant's casting is that he's no stranger to Doctor Who. In 1999 he appeared in the Moffat-penned Comic Relief special, Curse of the Fatal Death and in 2003's web-series, Scream of the Shalka. And in both adventures he played the role of... The Doctor.

Obviously both Curse of the Fatal Death and Scream of the Shalka are not in any way part of the show's official canon but it's certainly an unusual move on the part of the show's producers. Of course it could simply be that Richard E. Grant is a great actor and/or Moffat likes working with him but I'm sure his upcoming appearance will be the source of more than one multiversal/multi-Doctor theory online...
