NEWS: BBC to Adapt Historical Fantasy Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell

We've already told you the BBC has plans for Doctor Who in 2013, but it seems the errant time traveler won't be the only bit of telefantasy coming our way.

Buried away in the aforementioned BBC press release is the following little snippet:

Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, based on the best-selling novel by Susanna Clarke and adapted by Peter Harness, will bring magic and adventure to BBC One in prime-time.

An alternative-history-cum-fantasy novel, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell tells the tale of two 19th Century English magicians, the titular Strange and Norrell, who are drawn into using their powers to combat the forces of Napoleon. Written as a homage/pastiche of 19th Century literature - with nods to Austen, Dickens and the Gothic/Romantic genre - the novel was published in 2004 to critical acclaim. Although New Line Cinema optioned the novel for a movie adaptation, it appears this deal has now fallen by the wayside only to be picked-up by the BBC, with six, 60-minute episodes planned for their adaptation.

No word yet on a cast or when we can expect to see it air (beyond the obvious ''sometime in 2013'') but we'll keep you posted.
