NEWS: BBC Confirms Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special

It would be inconceivable to consider they wouldn't have something planned but the BBC has officially confirmed there will indeed be a ''Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special'' in 2013.

As reported at Den of Geek, BBC One's Controller Danny Cohen confirmed the celebratory special in a ''State of the Channel'' style round-up discussing - among other things - the BBC's upcoming dramatic output, in which he stated:

"Drama on BBC One takes another big leap in 2013 in the shape of some major event dramas, including The Village, Ripper Street, Luther, The White Queen and the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special. These shows will bring a rich range of tones and worlds to BBC One's fiction."

We'd previously reported on their plans for a historical drama exploring Doctor Who's origins (to be penned by Mark Gatiss) but this is the first time the BBC has confirmed they are to air a special episode marking the show's half-century. What form the special will take, who will be appearing and what fans can expect to see is still anyone's guess but we'll certainly be bringing you more on this in the future.
