It's time for another SLUG Zombie Review, this time featuring Series 3's geek girl extraordinaire, Double-Barrel Carol!
Disclaimer
Double-Barrel Carol is one of a number of SLUG Zombies provided for Review purposes by JAKKS Pacific (meaning we didn't actually buy this figure.) Just so you know.
Sculpt & Design
From her hipster glasses and fishnet glove right down to her (presumably) plaid skirt and, of course, heavy armament, Double-Barrel Carol is every bit the geeky, kick-ass nerd girl. What she appears to lack in physical dominance she makes up for with an acidic wit and a sharp attitude.
It's worth noting that the above character description isn't the official JAKKS Pacific one. It's simply what I thought as soon as I saw Double-Barrel Carol and it's a testament to the strong design of the figure that she immediately evokes a sense of history and character.
The sculpt work is, as we've come to expect, first class. The aforementioned character details are superb, clean and well-defined, with some really cool micro-detail on each. From the shotgun shells on her notched, broad-buckled belt to the pleats in her skirt and the laces on her boots, there's a ton going on here - yet it's never overwhelming or too ''busy.'' It's a shame these photos don't capture the detail or do justice to the sculpt.
Part of me wonders if this is JAKKS Pacific's tribute to the world's most famous monster-hunting geek girl, Velma Dinkley (of Scooby Doo fame) but I'm not sure if I'm simply making a connection between this figure and a previously-viewed piece of Velma fan art. Either way though, it's still not just a great sculpt but also a fantastic bit of character design.
The attitude continues over into the pose, with Double-Barrel Carol sporting a fantastic no-nonsense, ''don't mess with me'' coolness that speaks volumes about the character. (and yes, I'm reusing that word again.) And for a figure so slim (at least compared to the other SLUG Zombies) she has no problems standing unaided.
Paint
Obviously, like all SLUG Zombie figures Double-Barrel Carol is unpainted, instead sporting a rather cool peach/''MUSCLE-flesh'' colorway. For some reason the Zombie Hunters don't seem to photograph quite so clearly as the putrid green zombies, which is a real shame, as there's some fantastic detail work going on here...
Extras & Accessories
Double-Barrel Carol comes with the standard SLUG Zombies Series 3 biography/collector sheet.
Final Thoughts
Double-Barrel Carol is probably one of the coolest characters in the SLUG Zombies line. And I use the word ''character'' to mean just that, as you can almost imagine her wisecracking sass and kick-ass attitude as she dispatches the undead horde. Quite an achievement given it's no more than a 2'' tall lump of (albeit nicely sculpted) plastic.
She's one of those prime examples of how a strong concept and some well thought-out details and features can combine to produce something very special. The fact that the final sculpt is a knock-out is just the icing on the proverbial cake. If you're not a collector of the line or you're looking for a figure that will turn people onto the SLUG Zombie minifigures, then Double-Barrel Carol is your girl.
Quite possibly my favorite SLUG Zombie so far. And that's saying something.
Final Score: A

You know, I've been wondering who this is 'supposed' to be and I have to say, your assessment that she's based on the zombie killing Velma is the best proposal I've heard, and makes me want this one even more now!
ReplyDeleteHaha! Yeah, I kind of get a Velma vibe from her but with that said, a lot of the SLUG Zombies are also named after the folks at JAKKS Pacific, so maybe there's a Carol on the design team who's a kick-ass geek...!
