Doctor Who spin-off, Torchwood, is returning to our screens this Summer.
For those unfamiliar with the show, Torchwood follows members of the Torchwood Institute, a group created by Queen Victoria (following the events of Doctor Who episode Tooth and Claw) to defend the realm from alien invasion. Operating above the law and outside the government, the group is headed-up by Doctor Who regular, Captain Jack Harkness, an immortal former Time Agent and confidence trickster from the 51st Century. Initially told from the perspective of their newest recruit, former police officer Gwen Cooper, the show's has undergone a number of cast changes over the course of its first three Seasons.
Despite being pitched as an ''adult'' take on the Doctor Who universe, the first Season took some time to get over the ''freedom'' of being able to handle more mature topics, with many episodes feeling they'd been written by a giggly thirteen year old. Characterisation was uneven and continuity between episodes was poor, something that was addressed by the second Season, which featured a more cohesive set of stories and on-going character development.
The show really hit its stride with the ''television event'' series, Children of Earth, a five-part mini-series shown on five consecutive nights. With a concentrated and intelligent plot, a more mature take on the themes and better pacing, it seemed Torchwood had finally grown into its potential.
Season Four of Torchwood - also known as Torchwood: Miracle Day - sees a shift in focus, with episodes taking place in the UK and US and American characters being introduced into the mix. Although described a continuation of the original show, the producers have promised that viewers unfamiliar with the earlier Seasons will be able to pick-up the central concepts and view this show as new.
A teaser trailer has been released for Torchwood: Miracle Day which is set to hit US screens on July 8th on the Starz Network (who are also co-producing this new series). No word yet on the UK air date, but we'll keep you posted.
