Lego has announced that it's acquired the rights to produce mini-figures and play sets featuring both DC and Marvel properties.
The double-whammy of announcements started with Lego announcing yesterday it would be producing a range of DC Superhero play sets and kits including such well-known characters as Batman, Superman, Lex Luthor, Wonder Woman and The Joker. Attendees of the San Diego Comic Con will be able to pick-up exclusive Green Lantern and Batman mini-figures, with the regular figures hitting retail later this year.
Later that same day, Lego announced it had also secured the rights to develop toys based around DC's rival publisher, Marvel. From January 1st 2012, Lego will be producing play sets and construction kits featuring such heavy-hitters as Spider-Man, the X-Men and The Avengers, the first of which are set to hit retail around May 2012.
No word on how this affects the Mega Bloks Marvel deal, but it would seem that perhaps Lego's involvement could see an end to that line, as it would seem unlikely Marvel would support two construction/mini-figure lines.
