The SyFy Channel is to remake 80s sci-fi thriller, The Philadelphia Experiment.
The Philadelphia Experiment is the name given to an early series of experiments in stealth technology carried out by the US Navy. Allegedly the experiment - which involved using gravity to bend light around a battleship, thus rending it invisible - was successful but those involved experienced side-effects ranging from - and depending who you believe - nausea and sickness to full invisibility and the teleportation of an entire battleship...
The experiment entered the public conscience in 1984's sci-fi movie The Philadelphia Experiment, in which two members of the teleported USS Eldridge's crew found themselves propelled forward through time (conveniently to the then contemporary - and cheaper to film - 1984.)
Now the SyFy Channel is to produce a made-for-TV remake of the 1984 movie.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the new Philadelphia Experiment is set to star Malcolm McDowell, Nicholas Lea, Gina Holden and original movie cast member Michael Paré. The new version is set in the modern day and follows the attempts of a team of scientists to recreate the 1940s light-bending experiment, which results in the transportation of the USS Eldridge to the 21st Century ''with deadly consequences...''
The movie is set to air next year.
