NEWS: ''Lost'' Doctor Who Episodes Re-Discovered

During the 1960s and 70s the BBC - in an effort to conserve space and recycle used videotapes - purged their library of a number of TV show episodes, including Doctor Who. As a result of this, a number of episodes were lost forever.

Until yesterday...

As reported at the BBC's Doctor Who website, two lost episodes - Part Two of the Second Doctor adventure, ''The Underwater Menace'' and Part Three of the First Doctor's ''Galaxy 4'' - have recently been rediscovered.

Originally shipped overseas for broadcast on Australia's ABC in the 60s, the episodes managed to make it all the way back to Southampton, UK, where they were purchased in the early 80s by movie collector Terry Burnett. Unaware of their status, Mr Burnett only recently approached the BBC when he discovered the canisters contained these two previously lost episodes. Both have subsequently been restored and were aired publicly for the first time in over 30 years at the British Film Industry's ''Missing Believed Wiped'' event this weekend.

Long-time Doctor Who fan, writer and guest-star Mark Gattis summed up the find perfectly: "Christmas has come early for Doctor Who fans everywhere. It's always wonderful when a missing episode turns up but it's been years since the last one so to have two is just brilliant. Add to that a proper bit of action from the legendary Chumblies (and the horrifying Rills!) plus the utterly mesmeric Patrick Troughton on great form. Well, what more could we all ask for?"

Expect to see an announcement regarding their commercial release next year.
