NEWS: The Hobbit Casting News

For those who've been living in a mine for the last few years, Peter Jackson's big-screen adaptation of The Hobbit is now underway. Well, actually it's two adaptations, but that's beside the point.

Anyway, it appears that Martin Freeman (The Office, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Sherlock), who is starring as Bilbo Baggins, is set to be joined by his Sherlock co-star, the wonderfully-named Benedict Cumberbatch. According to HitFix Cumberbatch has been tapped to provide the voice of dragon Smaug (for which he'll also provide facial motion capture) and... another spoileriffic role, which is hidden after the jump.

In other casting news, Luke Evans (Immortals, The Three Musketeers, Clash of the Titans) will be playing Bard, with Stephen Fry as the Master of Laketown, Ryan Gage as The Master's servant, Alfrid and Conan Stevens as Azog. I'll avoid spoilers at this point but fans of the book will be familiar with these characters.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is set to for a world-wide release on December 14th, 2012.

Spoilers Ahead!

Cumberbatch will also be playing ''The Necromancer'' and as fans of Tolkien know, that's the guise Sauron adopted prior to his return to Morgoth. Does this mean we're going to see the White Council's attack on Dol Guldur?
