NEWS: NBC's Awake

We told you last week how NBC seemed hell-bent on removing all genre programming from its line-up. However, it seems that there is still somebody at the network who believes that it's possible to create intelligent, scripted drama with a twist, as evident with the no-air-date-announced-yet-but-at-least-it's-been-greenlighted Awake.

Awake follows Detective Michael Britten - played by British actor Jason Isaacs - who, following an automobile accident, finds himself living in two worlds: one in which the accident claimed the life of his wife, the other where his son was the fatality. Flipping between the two worlds whenever he sleeps Britten finds himself struggling to accept which version of events is a dream and which is reality. Or perhaps both - or neither - are.

Bleeding Cool has three short previews that set out the basic premise, plus a couple of interviews with the cast. Although the initial concept sounds as if it could be difficult to spin-out to a full-blown show, the final preview hints that perhaps there are other differences in the dual universes Britten spans that could be somehow connected. Whether there will be some form of reationalisation behind his condition or if the show can expand beyond this unique concept remain to be seen, but it's nice to see that NBC isn't giving over all its airtime to singing contests and single-season comedies.

No word yet on when Awake will air but we'll keep you posted.
