Despite delays to both The Wolverine and Deadpool, producer Lauren Shuler Donner insists both Marvel mutant movies are coming...
In an interview at HitFix, Ms Shuler Donner explains that development of The Wolverine (the sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine) is definitely still underway but that Hugh Jackman's workload has simply delayed the start of filming. Originally scheduled to begin later this year, the production has been put-back to ''maybe Summer 2012'' according to the producer.
Keen to address the critical reception of the original movie - which introduced a number of unpopular changes to key characters and left many fans of the comicbooks unsatisfied - Shuler Donner stated that The Wolverine would be ''much more of a stand alone [movie]'' and that they ''wanted to distinguish it from the other one.'' Presumably that explains why the sequel is called The Wolverine and not X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2.
But what of Wolverine's fellow mutant, Deadpool?
Realising that perhaps keeping the fan-base happy is a key to producing a successful comic-to-screen translation, Ms Shuler Donner commented "We're working on getting it ready, and presenting some things to the studio, cause we're gonna give it a little bit of a different look. It's a different kind of movie. If you know 'Deadpool'...it's true to 'Deadpool'. So you know, it'll be violent, and outrageous, and funny, and all that. So we're sort of putting it all together now."
However, like The Wolverine, Deadpool's big-screen outing is also dependent on the schedule of the returning lead - in this case Ryan Reynolds. Although Shuler Donner anticipates his return, it's worth noting that Reynolds was seen most recently portraying Green Lantern Hal Jordan. As DC and Warner Bros. are planning production of their own super-group movie in the form of The Justice League, filming of Deadpool could be delayed should Reynolds' commitment to Warner Bros. cause conflicts.
Finally, when asked about the possibility of a sequel to this year's X-Men: First Class, Shuler Donner was eager to express her interest in the project. ''"I hope so. We're talking about it, you know, we're seriously talking about it. We definitely want Matthew [Vaughn] to come back. Absolutely!"
It appears then that fans of Marvel's mutants may be in for a cinematic treat or two. They may just have to be a little patient.
X-Men: First Class comes to Blu-Ray and DVD tomorrow.
