REVIEW: GI Joe: Pursuit of Cobra - Desert Battle Dusty
Desert Battle Dusty | Produced by Hasbro | Released October 2010
Dusty is a desert combat specialist on the GI Joe team. He knows how to fight effectively in deserts, where there is no water, extreme daytime heat, freezing desert nights and harsh sandstorms. He has adapted his machine gun for desert use and can expertly capture the enemy with a well-placed barbed wire trap.
VIDEO VIEW: Kinder Surprise Commercial
You may not think there's a link between chocolate and That Figures (aside from the fact that we like eating it) but read on and all will be explained.
The Kinder Surprise AKA the Kinder Egg is a superb invention, a combination of very nice chocolate and blind-bagged/gashapon-esque surprise toys. OK, so the toys are generally a bit rubbish and not as complicated as the more expensive gashapon prizes but you don't get chocolate in gashapon machines, so it all balances out. Plus no gashapon machine has ever had a commercial so disturbing. It's like an Aphex Twin video, only weirder.

Riding the Ram Cycle, Sandstorm patrols the perimeter of the GI Joe team's base of operations. He's searching for Cobra troopers who may infiltrate the base to sabotage the team's vehicles and weapons. When he spots intruders, he unleashes the cycle's Gatling gun and sends them packing.
Sandstorm is a Military Police Officer assigned to the GI Joe team. A law enforcement specialist, he guards vehicle routes, conducts perimeter patrols, and does whatever is necessary to eliminate all threats to the people and bases he's assigned to defend.

REVIEW: GI Joe: Pursuit of Cobra - A.W.E. Striker with Night Fox

Night Fox is the GI Joe team's special combat and operations expert. This former Navy Seal takes control of challenging situations with tactical force and strategic impact. Calling on a broad range of skills including marksman, explosives expert and combat diver. VIDEO VIEW: ROM the Spaceknight Toy Fair Promo
A recent visitor comment set me off thinking again about this awesome toy.
For those who never experienced it, ROM the Spaceknight was a 12''-tall electronic action figure, which although quite limited in terms of articulation, had a number of cool electronic tricks up its sleeve. He was also the subject of his own Marvel Comicbook, which ironically outlasted the toy (which didn't exactly set the world on fire, sales-wise.)
On a separate note, there will not be any That Figures updates today. I'm off on a toy-hunting expedition and may not be back for some time...

REVIEW: GI Joe: Pursuit of Cobra - City Strike Firefly
City Strike Firefly | Produced by Hasbro | Released August 2010
Firefly works for Cobra as a saboteur with expertise in explosives, espionage and silent infiltration. During the urban battle he uses multi-resonance structural demolition (MRSD) pods to collapse a building, trapping the GI Joe team members inside. His titanium body armor and arm shields protect him from the blast.

REVIEW: GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra - Cobra Flight Pod with Elite-Viper
Cobra Flight Pod with Elite-Viper | Produced by Hasbro | Released 2010 [Cancelled]
An Elite-Viper in a Cobra Flight Pod flies above the city, guarding the secret facility that's developing attack drones. He spots a group of figures scaling the building and alerts Cobra troopers on the ground. Swooping down, he recognizes the intruders as GI Joe Ninjas and fires up his cannon to blast them!
Elite-Vipers are the personal guards of DESTRO and strict enforcers of their commander's orders. These top-notch mercenaries have extensive military training ans are skilled in the use of advanced weaponry developed by M.A.R.S. Industries.

City Strike Beachhead | Produced by Hasbro | Released July/August 2010
Wayne ''Beachhead'' Sneeden is an urban combat specialist on the GI Joe team. This former Army Ranger carries specialized gear and weapons including a gas mask for breathing in any environment and a U.P.R. Urban Plasma Rail weapon. His gear and training come in handy when he battles Alley-Vipers in the Cobra warehouse.

VIDEO VIEW: Alien Action Figure (1979)
Ah, toy manufacturers. Is there nothing they won't license? Given that Alien was an incredibly tense and at times very gory movie, it's quite surprising to see this toy even existed, let alone was advertised on TV. Keep in mind this was in the pre-Terminator 2 friendlification of the Big Bad Monster...
I actually owned this toy as a child (and passed it onto a friend, sans head-cover, just a few years ago.) My guess is the toy wasn't very popular, as I bought mine for 1.99 GBP - which was about the same price as a Star Wars figure at the time. Last time I checked, they were selling - granted in Mint Condition - for 100 times that...
It wasn't the greatest of action figures - the articulation was too limited - but it provided hours of fun spent chasing my Space Ranger Action Man...

REVIEW: GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra - Sand Serpent with Star-Viper
Sand Serpent with Star-Viper | Produced by Hasbro | Released January 2010
The Sand Serpent is an experimental aircraft designed by M.A.R.S. Industries employing stealth technology to maintain Radar invisibility. This striker jet bombards aerial and ground forces with prototype anti-armor maximum-range 4X missiles. It can cruise at a hypersonic speed of MACH 6 using the highly advanced HSE-3 Supercruise engine. The Sand Serpent jet provides Cobra with air support during the desert battle against the GI Joe team.
Star-Viper pilots command the skies in advanced fighter jets designed by M.A.R.S. Industries. These test pilots are precision-oriented experts in aeronautical engineering; they are also calculating, coldblooded warriors of the air.

NEWS: Nicholas Courtney 1929 - 2011

REVIEW: Spider-Man Power Charge Rhino
Power Charge Rhino | Produced by Hasbro | Released 2010
Aleksei Sytsevich was just another thug in the Russian Mafia, grasping at dreams of easy money, and headed for a short brutal life. Seduced by promises of wealth and power, Aleksei underwent a life-threatening series of chemical and radiation treatments to transform him after several months into the superhumanly strong agent for a collective of professional spies - in part, to support his family. Aleksei's powerful armor permanently bonded to his form, was modeled after the hide of a rhinoceros. Two scientists named Igor and Georgi chose this form, both for its visual impact and in recognition of the fact that the rhino is the result of countless generations of evolution towards the ultimate form for armored assault.

VIDEO VIEW: Evel Knievel Commercial
It's Evel Knievel! He's a K-nock-out!
Ideal produced a number of Evel Knievel toys throughout the 70s, with not just new vehicles and play-sets appearing but also new characters, including Evel's teenage son, Robbie - who even got his own natty blue costume. I also have memories of Evel getting his own diamond-topped cane at some point...
Things to look-out for in this commercial include the superb ''child-made'' banner at the start (no doubt produced by a 30-something prop master who almost caved-in and wrote it with a few backward letters) and the ''body language'' of the doll at around the 26-second mark during the Chopper ride. Maybe it's just coincidence or I'm reading too much into it, but he appears absolutely terrified.
And rightly so, as the commercial ends as you'd expect any good Evel Knievel stunt to - spectacularly.

NEWS: Marvel Universe ''Variant'' Re-Issues
It would appear that Hasbro has released a ''variant wave'' of figures as part of their popular Marvel Universe line.
A number of figures - including Ms Marvel, Warpath, Daredevil and Bullseye - have recently appeared on shelves and through online retailers, sporting new paint-jobs and alternative costume designs. Some of the changes are relatively minor - such as the darker-costumed Daredevil - but others feature some extensive changes, such as Warpath, now available in a red and black costume.
Most interestingly, the Ms Marvel - Review here - variant uses the original body but with a new head sculpt. Although at first glance it appears to be the modern Ms Marvel head, closer inspection reveals some changes, including the mask's new design. Presumably this is intended to represent the Dark Avengers Ms Marvel.
It's also worth noting that the variant reissues - which were selected from different Waves - still retain their original numbering and back-of-pack text.
Ms Marvel is Reviewed here. Warpath will be Reviewed soon.

As well as finding a number of GI Joe toys at marked-down prices (Walmart and Toys R Us are clearing-out their Rise of the Cobra vehicles for around half-price) today also heralded my first sighting of a new ''secret'' wave of Marvel variants Hasbro has snuck onto the shelves. I noticed earlier some online retailers had restocked with some ''rarer'' figures but it appears Hasbro has indeed re-issued some older figures, all be it with a twist, including a Daredevil in dark-red costume variant and my two purchases: the Ms Marvel variant (note that this appears to be the Dark Avengers Ms Marvel) and Warpath (again in a variant costume.)

VIDEO VIEW: Stretch Monster
Ah, gimmick-based toys...
Perhaps the best thing about these... dolls?... was that they made superb weapons. Yes, when the novelty of going ''raar!'' and stretching the... figure?... wore-off, we started using them as bludgeons to club each other during ''fun'' fights. A sock filled with wet sand? Pah. That was nothing compared to the nose-shattering, head-cracking, eyeball-loosening trauma you could inflict with ''playful'' shot from a Stretch toy...
Although my cousin had Stretch Monster, I myself owned an Elastic Heroes Hulk (a Mego toy), which, in the UK was released as part of the same ''Stretch'' line as Stretch Armstrong and Stretch Monster (both Kenner toys.) Presmably UK distributor Denys Fisher simply licensed toys from both companies and combined them into the same line for stronger brand recognition.
Finally, a note to the wise, learned from personal experience - don't store your Stretch toys in the same box as your (sharp) Lego pieces, unless you want the bricks to be permanently bonded together...
