REVIEW: GI Joe Rise of Cobra Polar Sharc with Ice Storm

Produced by Hasbro | Released 2010 [Cancelled] Re-Released 2011

The GI Joe team's Polar Sharc subs battle the Cobra Mantis Attack Crafts in the chilly waters of the arctic. The mini-subs are unleashed from the team's main underwater vessel and plunge into combat, blasting the enemy with Dive-6 Depth-Impact Vortex Energy Torpedoes. These one-person subs are swift, silen and can reach depths of up to 2,700 feet below sea level.

Ice Storm is the GI Joe team's cold-water marine combat and survival specialist. Take the worst battle situation then add subzero temperatures and freezing water: that's his environment, and he makes sure the team can fight and win under those conditions.

NEWS: GI Joe: Renegades Black Dragon First Look

Justin at General Joes was fortunate enough to get his hands on a pre-production version of the upcoming GI Joe: Renegades Black Dragon VTOL vehicle and has been kind enough to post a 13 minute video of the toy in action.

It saddening to see that the vehicle is so small (given the size of the Black Dragon in the cartoon) and that this appears to be the only original Bravo Class vehicle they're producing, but hopefully Hasbro will announce some additional vehicles nearer the Black Dragon's August release date.

REVIEW: GI Joe Desert Battle Cobra Viper

Produced by Hasbro | Released May 2011

Cobra Vipers are the highly motivated, superbly trained and formidably equipped backbone of the Cobra legions. Their combination assault rifle/grenade launcher can function as a short burst assault weapon, sustained fire cover support weapon or long-range marksman rifle with a night vision telescopic sight and range-finder.

NEWS: The Hobbit Movie Titles and Release Dates Announced

New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. have revealed that the upcoming adaptations of JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit are officially entitled as The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again. Personally I was hoping for The Hobbit 2: Electric Boogaloo, but there you go.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will hit cinemas on December 14th 2012, with the sequel, There and Back Again arriving a year later on December 13th 2013. Put those dates in your diary and don't leave home without your pocket handkerchief.

REVIEW: Marvel Universe's World War Hulk

Produced by Hasbro | Released December 2010

Betrayed by those he once called allies, and devastated by the destruction of a place he had come to call home, the HULK has returned to seek revenge. His massive stone starship hovers above the streets of Manhattan, and his alien army has turned downtown into a prison camp for the heroes of Earth. he will never descend to the level of those who betrayed him, but he intends to teach them all a lesson they will never forget.

REVIEW: GI Joe City Strike General Clayton 'Hawk' Abernathy

Produced by Hasbro | Released May 2011

The General is a West Point graduate with a list of special education credits as long as his arm. But he acquired the main body of his experience where it counts - on the battlefield. He's the type of commander who goes out and gets shot at like everyone else. Troops respect that. They know he won't ask them to do anything he isn't willing to do himself. That's why they're willing to do anything he tells them.

ViDEO VIEW: DC Super Powers Collection Commercial

For a toy commercial, it's surprising how long it takes this ad to actually show the toys, instead teasing would-be buyers with some low-quality animation (including some great funky struts) before the big reveal.

I particularly like is how Superman's super-punch action is transformed into some kind of excited toddler action at around the 20 second mark...

NEWS: X-Men Logos in the Skies!

In the run-up to the release of X-Men: First Class later this week, Marvel's Masters of Marketing really pulled-out the stops with their latest promotion: giant X-Men logos in the skies above LA, Atlanta and New York.

Head over to Bleeding Cool to view their gallery of visitor-submitted pics and KEEP WATCHING THE SKIES!

NEWS: X-Men: First Class Toys from Hot Toys

Deluxe collectables company Hot Toys has acquired the rights to produce licensed figures from the upcoming superhero movie, X-Men: First Class.

An update on their Facebook page announcing the deal offers little in the way of details but given that it's Hot Toys' specialty, we can assume these toys will be produced at 1/6th scale. No word yet on characters or release dates but we'll keep you updated.

Thanks to Toys R Evil for the tip.

TOY HAUL: 29th May

Following on from yesterday's Joetastic haul, here's what I chanced upon in Walmart during a grocery shopping trip. I still need Blowtorch and the Jungle B.A.T. to complete this Wave, but I did manage to snare a Viper and an Iron Grenadier, thus completing the previous Wave (in my mind at least - I passed on Croc Master.)

Expect Reviews soon.

REVIEW: GI Joe Rise of Cobra Tiger Claw ATV with Leatherneck

Produced by Hasbro | Released 2010 [Cancelled] Re-Released 2011

Tiger Claw ATVs prowl the jungle for MARS Industries labs that are developing more menacing uses for their nanomite technology. The ATVs chew through the wild terrain with their five-speed 850cc engine and optiflex suspension. Armed with an MG-80 120mm mortar, they can take on any Cobra troopers lurking in the shadows!

Leatherneck is a Marine who served as a Drill Sergeant and Gunnery Sergeant before joining the GI Joe team. As tough and unyielding as granite, he takes on anything - extreme environments, Cobra troopers - with the determination to keep fighting until he completes his mission.

TOY HAUL: 28th May

Today saw some great results:

A GI Joe Rockslide ATAV and Polar Sharc (thanks to Ross Dress for Less) and two Freaky Geeks from a Toys R Us vending machine (one of which I had but at least this is the fully-painted variant) started the day off well.

Billy's Comics and Toys yielded some great GI Joe finds: Deep Six, Shipwreck, a Crimson Neo-Viper and Sgt. Stone. Georgia collectors should make visiting Billy's store a priority, as not only is it amazingly-well stocked and competitively priced but shopping there is a pleasure thanks to the super-friendly staff.

In an effort to disprove my Collector Comment from yesterday, the God of Toys granted me a World War Hulk, Crazy Legs, Snake Eyes (Temple Guardian) and a Rock Viper (thanks to a random Walmart that - yet again - had stock no other store within 20 miles had.)

And in a weird moment of small world-ism, I also ran into fellow HISS Tanker Gyrapados at Billy's Toys and comics, which - bizarrely - wouldn't have happened had he not given me the tip off about Billy's new store in the first place...

All in all, a good day.

NEWS: Little Plastic Man's Marvel Flatheads

Papercraft-genius Little Plastic Man (AKA Adrian) has released his latest wave of Flathead paper toys.

Themed around the Marvel Universe, the PDFs used to create the five toys can be downloaded from Adrian's blog here. And don't forget to grab the two previous waves of these incredibly fun-looking and stunningly-creative toys.

NEWS: Captain America Comic Packs

If you're pulling your hair out in desperation trying to find the latest Captain America: The First Avenger figures, then you may want to (A) stop taking your collecting habit quite so seriously and (B) take a look at the two supersoldier-themed double-packs coming your way soon...

VIDEO VIEW: Super Helmet Seven Commercial

Super Helmet Seven! No it's not a Japanese head wear-themed super team but rather this ''boy's adventure accessory'' from the Sixties.

Super Helmet Seven! Presumably so-named to try and sell it as a companion-piece to the awesome Johnny Seven (OMA) gun, the Super Helmet Seven boasts a removable flashlight (batteries not included), a siren, indicator lights and a reflective strip among its chief ''powers.'' Which I'm sure would come in very handy for boys on the go.

Super Helmet Seven! Although the helmet has seven such functions, the one thing it doesn't do is protect you from the mockery you'd be subjected to if you were to actually wear it in public...

NEWS: First Production Shots of Smash Tokyo Toys - Halfbad Toyz Collaboration Seismic Centurion

We saw some early work-in-progress shots of it a week or so ago, but Halfbad Toyz has posted the first production shots of their upcoming Smash Tokyo Toys collaboration, the Seismic Centurion.

The shots show the Seismic Centurion -  a six-inch figure with two points of articulation - in a transparent-and-glitter-green, cast by Smash Tokyo Toys. Under the agreement between the two toymakers, Smash Tokyo toys will be producing such clear colourways with Halfbad Toyz producing solid, glow-in-the-dark and fully-painted versions.

We're also told the release will be ''insanely limited'' numbers-wise.

TOY HAUL: 27th May

I finally found - purely by chance - two of the cancelled Wave 3 Alpha Class Vehicles from The Rise of Cobra toy line at a Ross Dress for Less store. Not a bad haul but I'd hoped to find all four (neither of the Ross stores had the other vehicles, sadly.)

I also found (and passed on) the two X-Men: First Class Greatest Battles packs at Toys R Us. It was good to see some new stock there (finally!) although there was still no sign of the latest Marvel Universe or GI Joe Waves.

The Hunt continues!

REVIEW: Gormiti Dedalus, The Undergrounder

Produced by GP Toys | Released January 2009

Not everyone's idea of a best friend, Dedalus lives deep underground. Unaware of day and night, he digs tunnels in a dark world that has left him blind.. He sees and hears thanks to his powers and fangs that can feel everything around them... the slightest tremor... the faintest footstep... Dedalus is very near...

NEWS: Armored Pheyaos and Reality Bites Nibbler Gone.

The three-way mashups from Onell Design, The Tarantulas and Real X Head - Armored Pheyaos and Reality Bites Nibbler - went on sale last night (along with a third, previously unannounced Flesh Chaos Trooper Blank.) And promptly sold out in record time, selling faster than any previous Real X Head release. Congratulations to all involved on the production side and to everybody who managed to score one of these very cool vinyl toys.

For those who weren't so lucky you can console yourself with this, the Cherry Mints comic strip by Matt Doughty and Ralph Neise.

REVIEW: Microman MicroCommand M163 Smith (1999 Replica)

Produced by Takara | Released 1999

Readers over the age of 30 or so may see something familiar about this toy. Chances are if you grew-up in the late 70s you may have owned the Westernised version of this figure, which you'd know as the Micronauts Pharoid. However, his origins are a lot deeper than that, as we'll find out.

REVIEW: GI Joe Rise of Cobra - Jungle Assault Ripcord

Produced By Hasbro | Released 2009

Military pilot Wallace ''Ripcord'' Weems is the bets friend of Conrad ''Duke'' Hause. He uses a HB-41 heat-burst rocket launcher to stop attacking Jungle-Vipers when the team encounters a mysterious building hidden in the jungle.

NEWS: Captain America Goes to Washington...

... well, Los Molinos. But there's not a movie called ''Mr Smith Goes to Los Molinos'' so you'll have to excuse the inaccuracy.

NEWS: Bill Nighy Joins Cast of Total Recall Remake

Cult British actor Bill Nighy is in negotiations to appear in the upcoming remake of the 1990 sci-fi Ah-noldthon, Total Recall, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Nighy, who's probably best known for his role as Davy Jones in the Pirates of the Caribbean series and vampire Viktor in the Underworld movies, is in talks to play resistance leader Quatto in the upcoming remake, which ditches the Mars-based action for a grittier, Earth-bound feel. Directed by Len Wiseman (who previously directed Nighy in the Underworld movies), the new Total Recall stars Colin Farrell, Bryan Cranston, Underworld alumnus Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel.

Shooting begins next month, so expect to see more soon.

NEWS: New Cowboys & Aliens TV Spot

Universal has ramped-up the promotion campaign for upcoming sci-fi actioner, Cowboys & Aliens, with a new TV spot, which you can see here, thanks to Atomic Martians.

Although there's not much here we haven't seen in the theatrical trailers, it's still looking to be a pretty fun action flick, ideal for a Summer viewing. No word yet on a final release date but we'll keep you posted.

REVIEW: GI Joe Rise of Cobra - MARS Industries Trooper Three Pack

Produced by Hasbro | Released July 2009

These well-trained troopers work for James McCullen, who is the head of MARS Industries, an ultra-secret weapons research and development organization founded by McCullen's ancestors. A security force is necessary to protect the advanced technology developed by McCullen - and the MARS troopers deliver that protection with extreme skill and extreme force. There is no limit to what may be asked of these troopers - even the surrender of their free will.

MARS INDUSTRIES TROOPER
These troopers provide security for MARS Industries, the corporation that develops advanced weapons and is owned by James McCullen. They are a quasi-military force that guards the corporation and its interests. The troopers are highly trained in combat tactics and equipped with advanced weapons and gear designed by this mysterious weapons firm. Chosen for their aggression, loyalty and military skill, this fighting force will do anything required of them.

MARS INDUSTRIES OFFICER
These officers command the trooper who guard MARS Industries. They are trained by James McCullen, the head of this shadowy corporation that develops advanced weapons for the military. Officers are selected for their demonstrated leadership ability, extreme loyalty to the corporation and ability to apply military strategy. They are also trained in espionage to support the syndicate by ferreting out corporate spies or acquiring information valuable to the company's interests.

NEWS: Win a Box of Toys from Halfbad!

The guys at Halfbad Toyz posted an update today containing some very cool news about their upcoming releases, plans and current their projects. Although you can check it out for yourself, the update confirms that Skekiltor is back in stock (following a minor casting issue that held-up production for a couple of days), that the Smash Tokyo Toys-collaboration Seismic Centurion is almost imminent and also includes a reminder that the exclusive violet glow-in-the-dark Podiagon pre-order ends soon.

They're also offering a box of toys (or should that be ''Toyz?'') to one random blog Follower if they can make it to 100. As of today the number stands at 59, so there's a little way to go but hopefully when word gets out not just of this giveaway but also about how cool the Halfbad Toyz projects are, we'll see that number rise as more people join Halfbad's Army.

We'll bring you more on the Seismic Centurion and Halfbad's other releases when we get it but in the meantime you can read the update for yourself.

VIDEO VIEW: Mego Pocket Superheroes

I always wanted this Batman and Batmobile set but my parents were never able to find it for me and I had to ''make do'' with the Dinky Batmobile/Batboat/Batcopter set instead, which wasn't anywhere near as good. And yeah, I realise now - as an adult - how selfish an attitude that was, given my parents had got me the next best thing they could when the Mego Pocket Superheroes were nowhere to be found.

What's surprising about this ad (aside from Spider-Man not only having a car but letting the Hulk drive it) is the way both DC and Marvel properties are presented in the same commercial. Granted they only appear on-screen together at the end and don't interact but it's still quite an unusual cross-over...

(LOCAL) NEWS: Billy's Toys and Comics Now Open

Georgia toy collectors familiar with Billy's Place and HD Comics and Toys, both formerly of the Pendergrass Flea Market, will be pleased to see that owner Billy Hollis has just opened a new store, Billy's Toys and Comics.

The store - located in Flowery Branch - is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 AM until 7PM and Sundays from 10 AM until 5 PM and carries an absolutely amazing selection of toys, from new releases to vintage. Just take a look at the above photo and you'll see how incredibly diverse and well-stocked the store is. Add to that an owner who's also a collector (and incredibly helpful, friendly guy to boot) and you'll see why my weekend plans have just taken on a Flowery Branch-ish flavour.

Billy's Toys and Comics is located at 3569 Atlanta HWY, Flowery Branch, GA 30542. You can also check out the store's Facebook page for additional photos and info.

NEWS: Green Lantern 3D Trailer (In 2D)

OK, so it's a little misleading of Warner Bros. to label this the ''3D Trailer'' but various things will be leaping out from the screen when it's seen in cinemas. Plus it's a new trailer and - 3D or not - fills in a lot of the backstory and that's a good thing, even if it's starting to feel that we've seen most of the movie in a fragmented form thanks to the previous... five? six? trailers.

Green Lantern hits theatres on June 17th.

NEWS: KHFC Monster Raffle

Hot on the heels of the Kaiju for Japan and Heroes Give Hope fund-raising auctions comes another very worthy endeavour: the KFHC Monster Raffle

Taking a slightly different approach the KFHC Monster Raffle - as the name suggests - is a ticket-based lottery (rather than an auction) where - for a mere $5 - you can donate directly to the Japanese Red Cross plus stand the chance to win prizes from Mutant Vinyl Hardcore, Plaseebo, Splurrt, Smash Tokyo Toys and a whole host of others who've contributed their works.

Ticket(s) go on sale here and are available from June 1st, with the final draw taking place on the 25th.

Thanks to Toybot Studios for the spot.

NEWS: Sy-Fy Original Series ''Alphas'' Trailer

Alphas - which is set to air on the Sy-Fy Channel next month - is the story of a group of ''extraordinary individuals who've learned to stretch the capabilities of the human mind.''

In preparation for the premiere episode on the 11th of July the SyFy Channel has released this new preview/teaser/trailer, which should give you a better insight into the show.

REVIEW: GI Joe Pursuit of Cobra Cobra Fury with Alley-Viper Officer

Produced by Hasbro | Released 2010

Cobra Fury Tanks roll through the nighttime streets of an Asian city to test their prototype engineering and firepower. The compact design allows these vehicles to move easily through roads and alleys. The battering ram and side-shot middle launcher can clear obstacles in their path with plenty of direct force and concentrated fury.

Alley-Viper Officers specialize in urban combat and lead platoons of Alley-Viper Troopers in ground assaults. These Cobra officers train their troops to conduct fast-strike operations of takeover and sabotage in cities around the world. In an Asian city, they battle the GI Joe team to prevent them from infiltrating a Cobra warehouse.

NEWS: Full Torchwood Trailer at Bleeding Cool

We brought you the talked-over, cut-down trailer for the upcoming BBC-Starz Network co-production, Torchwood: Miracle Day last week but now Bleeding Cool has the whole thing, sans annoying commentary and in full.

No word on the UK air date but Torchwood: Miracle Day is set to air in the US on the Starz Network on the 8th of July.

VIDEO VIEW: Farmers Insurance/X-Men: First Class Crossover

There've been a lot of crossovers in the world of comics. Batman vs Captain America, Namor's first tanglings with Fantastic Four, and of course, the Secret Wars. Now that tradition continues with this ad from Farmers Insurance, featuring the X-Men and J.K. ''J. Jonah Jameson'' Simmons.

X-Men: First Class hits cinemas next month.

Thanks to Bleeding Cool for spotting this.

NEWS: Gold Dober's Circus Roboids

We've covered the awesome fan project Roboid many, many times here and its creator, Gold Dober, is fast becoming our favourite (if slightly insane) Micronauts fan. Today sees him continue to cement that position with his latest project, the Circus Roboid, a figure made-up from  the unused parts from his Magnus Opus, Roboid.

But before you think of them as cast-offs or manufacturing errors, think again: as he points out, ''there's nothing wrong with the piece physically. It's a color tint cast off. The wrong tint or a tint I didn't want to use.'' So in reality they're more akin to chase variant colourways.

No word yet on when the four-figure run will be available or pricing details but in the meantime you can check out Gold Dober's Homeworld Blog here.

NEWS: Real Steel Toys

We've already seen the hilariously clichéd ''awesome'' trailer for Real Steel but now Entertainment Earth has the figures from the tie-in toy line.

Produced by Jakks Pacific (the same guys behind the pretty neat-o TNA Impact Wrestling figures we saw last week) the line includes Basic and Deluxe figures, ''Build and Brawl'' playsets plus a not-at-all-recycled-from-the-wrestling-toys ring. No word yet on whether the figures will have any kind of special ''play'' features but I wouldn't be surprised if they had some form of Super Punch Action or swap/construction aspect to them. Given their price, I'd certainly expect something.

Thanks to Toys R Evil for the tip.

NEWS: X-Men: First Class Greatest Battle Packs Hitting Shelves Now

Eagle-eyed (or just obsessive) fans may have noticed our Release Dates listings were recently updated recently to include the X-Men: First Class Greatest Battles Packs as being ''Out Now.'' This was a result online rumblings from various collectors stating that they'd found the toys on shelves. We can now however confirm - thanks to this post from Jboypacman - that the X-Men: First Class double packs are indeed now in stores.

What's not confirmed is whether all of these figures are new sculpts or simply repackaged, older figures. That certainly appears to be the case with the Wolverine/Sabretooth pack, which looks to feature the previously-released brown costume Secret Wars Wolverine and Sabretooth from the Blob/Sabretooth double pack.

NEWS: Outer Space Thingz from Halfbad Toyz

Halfbad Toyz has announced the Outer Space Thingz!

Available in six-piece sets - for a very reasonable $12 per pack - the toys come in randomly-selected colourways and include glow-in-the-dark and hand-painted chase variants.

You can see more of these very cool toys over at the Halfbad Toyz blog or jump straight over to their online store and grab them for yourself here.
