PODCAST: Geek Shall Inherit Episodes 051 & 052

Serendipity. It's one of those words that actually sets my teeth on edge. But it's the only word I can use to describe what happened when we failed to post the latest episode of the Geek Shall Inherit Podcast. Why is that not simply an oversight? Because this week's episode is the second part of the discussion that began in that missed episode, so in that way, serendipity covered our asses.

And of course, I could have saved myself all those images of fairy magic and pixie dust and whimsically-named cupcake bakeries by using the way cooler ''synchronicity'' but I'm committed now.

AFFILIATE LINK: The Hobbit Orcrist Replica Prop

Goblin Cleaver... Biter... Orcrist.

This incredibly detailed, movie-accurate replica prop of Thorin Oakenshield's mighty blade is forged from stainless steel, features a grip cast from the original movie hero sword and measures in at a whopping 38'' long. And from February of next year, it could be adoring the walls of your home.

Note: This is a collectible replica prop, not a role-play toy! It is intended for adult collectors only.

VIDEO VIEW: Star Trek Into Darkness Trailer #2

Here's the newest Star Trek Into Darkness trailer, which also presents an opportunity to provide a couple of related ''micro-news'' points:
  • The blue-uniformed woman seen screaming in the trailer has since been confirmed to be none other than Dr Carol Marcus, a character fans of Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan will be very familiar with.
  • The Khan ties continue in the nine-minute IMAX preview that accompanies screenings of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, in which Spock offers his famous ''needs of the many...'' argument.

Just some food for thought there...

PODCAST: Cult Film Club Episode #2

Paxton, Jaime and Shawn return for the second episode of the Cult Film Club Podcast, where this time around the discussion turns to an attempt to define just what ''cult'' is - a discussion that will - SPOILERS - continue in the next episode! Dun-Dun-DUUUUN!

But act fast, as The Hobbit toys are set to be this year's must have collectible figure line.

VIDEO VIEW: Man of Steel Trailer #2

It's always dangerous to make sweeping assumptions about movies based solely on their trailers - although it's never stopped me in the past - but I've got to say I'm kind of underwhelmed by this extended Man of Steel trailer. Here's hoping the final movie has a little more oomph to it.

PODCAST: Nerd Lunch Podcast 65

This week's Nerd Lunch Podcast is dedicated to Tim Burton, a director whose work was once revered as brilliant but who now many feel has perhaps started to create pastiches of his own movies due to his over-reliance on the same visual cues, outsider-themed story lines and Helena Bonham Carter. See what the Nerds - and special guest star Matt from Schlock Treatment - have to say on the matter and find out if they rule him Guilty or Not Guilty...

And that was the day I learned that maybe me and my Dad weren't so different after all...

If that awesome impression didn't tip you off, this week's Retroist Podcast is all about the nostalgic feel-good hit The Wonder Years. Did you know they all actually died in the end and the entire series was Kevin trying to justify his existence to a higher power? OK, maybe that's not entirely accurate but it's better than the usual claims about Marilyn bloody Manson being in it...

REVIEW: Marvel Universe's Scarlet Witch

Produced by Hasbro | Released November 2012

This powerful mutant has the unique ability to control the probability field, the force that guides everything in the universe. By focusing her energy and creating a hex-sphere, SCARLET WITCH is able to alter reality,  causing objects to move, melt, rot and change in ways her enemies can't defend. She can alter the course of any battle, conjuring objects out of nowhere or wiping them out of existence in an instant.

NEWS: Target's Multipurpose Tripod and Flashlight

Whilst hunting through a nearby Target for the Holiday Edition SLUG Zombies (two stores down, two to go!) I came across these rather cool tripod-mounted LED flashlights and immediately saw the potential of these lights for anybody who photographs toys (or does work requiring close-up detail) and so grabbed a couple for myself.

I'm still experimenting with the best way to use them (I have to admit I've always preferred direct light to diffused lighting, so these lights are really a hit with me) but so far the results have left me feeling very pleased with my purchase, especially as each pack - which contains a surprisingly stable and flexible tripod and very cool LED light (which sadly doesn't come with the required 3 AAA batteries)  - retails at just $5. So if you're looking for an inexpensive - and surprisingly good - light/tripod set-up, you could do worse than take a look.
