TOY HAUL: 30th April

Apologies for the lack of original updates over the last few days. My camera died on me earlier in the week and today saw an epic Toy Hunt around a number of Ross Dress for Less, Marshall's, Toys R Us, Walmart and Target stores.

Sadly the pickings were slim (and I was annoyed to see the GI Joe Attack on the GI Joe Pit play-set in a Ross store ripped-open and the figures removed...) but I was able to score the latest wave of Greatest Battles Comic Packs, namely Deadpool vs Taskmaster and Wolverine (Patch) vs Silver Samurai (as pictured above.)

Reviews will be on their way soon...

VIDEO VIEW: Monchici (For The Ladies)

I've no idea if That Figures even has a female readership or if posting this video for ''the ladies'' is considered sexist* but here's Mattel's 1980s girl-friendly, cuddly 'n' cute soft toy, Monchichi (AKA Chicaboo.)

So light some candles, put on your Dido CD, open up that bar of Dove and enjoy this sugary-sweet bit of 80s soft-toy loveliness. Make the most of it though, as next time we'll be back to robots, aliens and proper toys.

NEWS: Transformers 3 Trailer

Fans of robotic cars and explosions will be pleased to see that the new Transformers: Dark of the Moon trailer is now online for your viewing pleasure.

NEWS: Marvel Universe Wave 13 Revision 1

Psst... Wanna sneak peek at what Hasbro's Wave 13 Revision 1 cases of the Marvel Universe line have inside 'em? Then head over to Atomic Martians for the full breakdown!

It's nice to see Thanos and World War Hulk appearing again, as I was never able to locate either of those figures, but I'm sure a lot of collectors will be annoyed to see the Human Torch ''Flame On'' variant and other  ''rare'' figures they invested a lot of time and effort (and of course, cash) in tracking down. Personally I hope Hasbro continue this trend of re-issuing their back-catalogue as a way to discourage the outrageous scalping that goes on with a lot of these figures.

NEWS: More Conan Reboot Plot Details Revealed

We've already seen the teaser trailer and read the brief synopsis, but now Bleeding Cool has substantially more information on the upcoming Conan the Barbarian, thanks to the Press Release issued by Lion's Gate.

The producers acknowledge the excellent 1982 Ah-noldfest but say they ''see that film as only a small part of a much larger Conan universe that has continued to develop over the decades since its inception... We're approaching [this film] as a film based on an entire culture.'' Whatever that means.

It's a tough act to follow, given how freaking awesome the John Milius-helmed adaptation was (and I strongly urge you watch it with the Ah-nold/Milius double-act commentary, as it's hilarious) and whilst I hate to sound negative, I'm not seeing anything here that I haven't seen in countless low-budget/SyFy Channel ''heroic fantasy'' movies... I'm hoping to be proved wrong, though, as a character like Conan deserves a revival.

NEWS: GI Joe 2011 Wave 4 Unboxing

Jason over at Atomic Martians has all the video goodness on the 2011 Wave 4 of his newly-arrived GI Joe Pursuit of Cobra line.

VIDEO VIEW: The Outer Space Men TV Commercial

Although we've already reported on their modern counterparts' return, it's the turn of the original Outer Space Men to take centre stage in this Video View segment.

Sure, the Outer Space men's rival toyline Major Matt Mason may have a more spaceriffic commercial, but this 1967 ad is still pretty awesome and it's worth watching if only for the kid's expression of joy at the end of the line-up pan...

NEWS: Paulkaiju's King Jinx Revealed!

There's a new Kai(ju) in town. His name's King Jinx.

The superbly-strange King Jinx - who appears to be a cross between a crab and a Pharaoh - is the latest creation from PaulKaiju. Paul says the character ''was based off a Kaiju TV show concept a friend and I dreamed up in the early 80s.'' That's what happens when you eat cheese before bed.

You can see more of King Jinx's very cool-looking sculpt over at PaulKaiju.com

NEWS: Roboid Release Date Set

We told you yesterday about Gold Dober's super cool-looking Biotron homage, Roboid. Today we can confirm that the figure will go on sale on Sunday May 1st.

The figure - which is limited to TEN pieces - has yet to be given an official price-point, but from previously-posted comments (and its rarity) expect to see something in the $75-100 range. We'll find out on Sunday when the figure's final release details are announced.

VIDEO VIEW: Terminator 2 Bio-Flesh Regenerator

After yesterday's awesome Strange Change (Time) Machine, it's time for another gimmick-based toy, the Terminator 2 Bio-Flesh Regenerator.

Yes, now you too can create your own naked Ah-nold action figures and then hack-off their flesh, only to regenerate it using the special ''Flesh Compound.'' And when you run out of Flesh Compound you can use the toy to... um... yeah.

NEWS: MOTUC Releases for 2011

Fan's of the Princess of Power will be pleased to see she's numbered among the four releases in May's Masters of the Universe Classics wave. The bad news? Orders of Princess Adora's alter ego are guaranteed for pre-2011 subscribers only - ditto with Stratos and Whiplash. So if those three figures catch your eye, be prepared to do some rapid ordering when they're made available to the unwashed masses.

The good news is new subscribers will at least receive their Catra figure... No, I don't know, either.

Personally I don't understand why they simply don't produce more figures. Are the $20 subscriptions to the Matty Collector club really more profitable than the revenue they could generate by simply selling more of the toys in an open market?

Anyway, you can see more of the upcoming figures over at the Matty Collector MOTUC sub-site.

Today is a very slow news day.

NEWS: Roboid Update

On Monday we took our first look at Roboid, the Biotron homage figure from Gold Dober.

The project it seems is going at full steam ahead now, with the packaging arriving and final prep work underway for the assembly of the 17 figure run over the weekend. We're also promised details on the ''When and the How Much'' on Sunday, according to this post.

We'll keep you updated as we hear more.

NEWS: Cthulhu 2.0 Test Pull Auction

Luke Harris of L.Designs is a very busy man. Not only did he release his new super-cool looking Cthulhu 1.2 colourways earlier this week but now he's auctioning the three test pulls from his Cthulhu 2.0 minifig.

Cthulhu 2.0 uses a combination of MUSCLE and Battle Beast parts, plus original sculpting to create this minifig of Lovecraft's greatest creation. The resin figure is hand-cast from a glow-in-the-dark plastic and includes a hand-applied dark wash to accentuate the figure's details.

This is a limited run, one of a kind piece and bidding starts at just $15. Act fast though, as they won't be around forever!

NEWS: Final X-Men: First Class Trailer

Another day, another X-Men: First Class trailer, or so it seems.

Hitfix has the latest - and what they're calling ''Final'' - trailer.  Presumably this is the finished, fully-tweaked and signed-off promo we'll be seeing in the run-up to the movie's release on June 3rd.

Judgement is still being reserved (I must admit I'm not a big X-Men fan anyway) but the historical setting looks like an interesting addition (even if they still have the wrong-looking Beast in it.)

REVIEW: Marvel Universe Squinkies Thor, Silver Surfer and Doctor Doom

Produced by Blip Toys | Released April 2011

Squinkies are a line of miniature figures produced by Blip Toys. Resembling vending machine/gashapon toys, Squinkies have been available for some time at various stores in a series of ''girl-friendly'' figures (such as ponies, kittens and other small, cute animals) but the line has now branched out to include boy-friendly figures,  including the newly-launched Marvel Universe figures.

NEWS: We Come in Peace Teasers

We've already seen the brilliant FlatHeads from Little Plastic Man but it looks as if Adrian is planning a new set of paper toys if the ''We Come in Peace'' teasers from his site are to be believed.

Whether they're a follow-up wave of FlatHeads or a completely new line, we've yet to figure out but when we know more, so will you.

REVIEW: GI Joe 25th Anniversary - Cobra Eel

Produced by Hasbro | Released 2008

COBRA EEL troopers are the underwater demolition specialists of the COBRA legions. They man and operate COBRA marine outposts disguised as off-shore drilling rigs and augment the crews of larger COBRA naval vessels. COBRA EEL troopers undergo a rigorous two-part training program in the warm shark - and pirate-infested waters of the Cayman Islands in the Caribbean and in the frigid, dark depths of the North Atlantic. Their training regimen includes marine structural engineering, explosive ordinance, underwater fighting techniques and marine geology.

VIDEO VIEW: The Strange Change Machine

I've mentioned before that I'm not a huge fan of gimmick-based toys. Gimmicks get boring quickly and tend to leave you unsatisfied when the initial novelty has worn off. And although I'm sure the same would be true of this - the Strange Change Machine (which also appears to be called the Strange Change Time Machine, judging by the front-piece on the toy itself...) - it's still pretty awesome to watch in action.

Not only does this thing have a great electronic-scored commercial, but the toy itself looks like it could be a lot of fun. Mattel need to bring this back, as the science behind how it all works is fascinating and I could see those capsules being sold in ''booster packs'' to expand your army of creatures. And best of all, you could probably dry your hair and whip-up some waffles using that funky heater, making it an ideal toy for the sci-fi obsessed, preening, fat child in your life.

NEWS: Transformers 3 Teaser Pics

Like robots? Like cars? Like robots that turn into cars? Then you'll probably already have your tickets pre-ordered for Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

But if you want to see more and can't wait for the movie's release, then you'll no doubt be very pleased to see these teaser images over at Hitfix.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon is set to hit cinemas this Summer.

NEWS: New, New Green Lantern Trailer

We've already seen a lot of what's on offer here in the previous trailer, but it would be remiss of me to deprive fans of the Green Lantern/Ryan Reynolds of this opportunity to see more of their hero in action.

I'm not a big DC fan but I have to admit, this is looking pretty good...

NEWS: Marvel Universe Series 3 Wave 3 Hitting US Shores

More a factoid or newsgget (that's my new word for ''news nugget'') than a full News story, but fellow blogger Aeries0083 has once again spotted an interesting Marvel Universe-related Youtube vidiew (yeah, work that one out...), this time of the First Appearance Wolverine from Series 3's Wave 3 from a US-based vidlogger - confirming that the new wave is now hitting stores here.

Although the videoblogger in question believes the figures to be ''specially ordered'' by the store she found them in, there have been other - unsubstantiated - reports of these toys being on shelves. This, however, is the first ''documented'' sighting of them.

More on this aswegit.

UPDATE: Aeries0083 has confirmed the figures are indeed in stores now.

VIDEO VIEW: Major Matt Mason Commercial (1968)

People are too blasé about space travel these days. I know few of us actually do it and we don't live on the moon (as this commercial suggested) but look at modern toy commercials featuring alien worlds and outer space and how they're all too safe and friendly. Now check-out this awesome commercial for Mattel's space-based adventurer. Look past the Dr Seuss-esque rhyming commentary and listen to the music, the opening silence and the weird jumbled speech at the beginning. And who are those people in the background, silhouetted against the window? Parents? Or alien observers watching the children at play?

Perhaps it's just as well we didn't get to live on the moon after all, given how scary this commercial makes it all look...

REVIEW: Marvel Universe's Electro

Produced by Hasbro | Released September 2009

You can always judge a man by the quality of his enemies. After all, great storytelling isn't just about great heroes - it's about great villains, too. Would Batman be so popular if his nemesis had been an accountant who'd stolen some paper clips? Would Holmes' plunge to his death at the Reichenbach Falls been so memorable if he's simply tripped over a goat?

In the world of comicbooks, there's one hero with a Rogues' Gallery that's head and shoulders above every other comic character: Spider-Man. Which brings us to today's offering: Marvel Universe's Electro.

NEWS: Imperfecz Cthulhu 1.2 Now Available

$20 won't buy you much these days. Dinner for four at a fast-food place... A SyFy Channel creature feature on Blu-Ray... And it certainly wouldn't get you a one-of-a-kind, hand-produced, limited-run piece of art... Would it?

Actually.... Yes.

NEWS: Avengers Movie Starts Shooting Today!

After teasing us in Iron Man, Iron Man 2: Electric Boogaloo, The Hulk and - presumably - in the post-credit sequences from the upcoming Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger, it's finally time for the Avengers to assemble, as filming on the supergroup movie is set to commence.

NEWS: Roboid - Microman Robotman-Inspired Figure

Fans of Microman's and the Micronauts' Robotman/Biotron may be interested in Roboid - an awesome  repro/tribute to the Takara/Mego classic. Created by Gold Dober over at the Micronauts Homeworld Blog, the figure is a hand-made resin figure cast with multiple parts and available in a very limited run.

FAN ARTICLE: Bill Mantlo Tribute by Andrew Cosson

Today's Fan Article contribution comes from Andrew Cosson and is his tribute to comicbook legend, Bill Mantlo.

Sadly Mr. Mantlo - one of Marvel's most influential modern writers - was injured in a hit and run incident some years ago and was left with brain damage that resulted in him requiring constant care and attention. Oregon-based store Floating World Comics host regular fund-raising drives for Mr. Mantlo, where professional and amateur artists are invited to donate works for their auctions - such as this one - based around Rom The Spaceknight, the toy-turned-comicbook character Mantlo was instrumental in translating to the printed page (as he did with Marvel's other toy-based property, The Micronauts.)

As well as including the Spaceknight also features characters from the Micronauts series, plus - from ''mainstream'' Marvel - The Hulk and Alpha Flight's Box and Snowbird.

COOL CAPSULES: Freaky Geek Knuckles

Freaky Geeks are a new line of 50c vending machine toys with a decidedly ''urban vinyl'' feel to them. Although I'd seen them online before (although I can't find where now...) I was surprised to see a machine vending the Freaky Geeks toys at my local Publix. Four quarters later and I had two Freaky Geeks in-hand, the first of which is Knuckles, the subject of today's Cool Capsules.

NEWS: Callgrim Custom Corps Finally Revealed

We covered the initial teaser last week but now Jesse over at the Callgrim Blog has posted more details on the upcoming Callgrim Custom Corps drop.

NEWS: New Halfbad Toyz Feet Head Image

Feet Head is the second toy in the FOEZ range from Halfbad Toyz, following on from their awesome-looking Skekiltor figure. Sculpted by Steve Patt and featuring - for the first time in the FOEZ line - articulation, Feet Head is shaping-up very nicely, as you can see here.

Meanwhile there's a whole host of new stuff available at the Halfbad Toyz web store

As well as including original works such as the superb-looking Skekiltor (in a variety of one-off colourways and paint-jobs), the ''Red Pig'' resin figure and these super-cute/super-cool (delete where applicable) Robits resin figures, there's also this excellent custom-painted TMNT Rocksteady figure. And best of all, prices start at an incredible $5.

Ray (The Phantom Menace, The X-Men) Park has confirmed via his Twitter account that he will be returning to the role of Snake Eyes in the sequel to the 2009 movie, the tentatively-titled GI Joe 2: Cobra Strikes. Interestingly, Snake Eyes was one of three characters mentioned as returning in the sequel (along with Duke and Storm Shadow) in a previous Tweet by Rachel 'Scarlet' Nichols.

Still in the pre-production stage, GI Joe 2 is being directed by lifelong Joe fan Jon (Justin Bieber: Never Say Never) Chu, who recently described his take as ''gritty.''

We'll keep you posted on this one...

REVIEW: GI Joe Pursuit of Cobra - Jungle Assault Jungle-Viper

Produced by Hasbro | Released October 2010

VIDEO VIEW: The Doctor Who Theme

Undeniably the greatest theme tune ever written, the Doctor Who Theme (composed by Ron Grainer and ''realised'' by Delia Derbyshire) is - like the show itself - a brilliantly flexible, adaptable and re-interpret-able composition. Over the years it's gone from weirdly experimental sci-fi to movie score epic, it's been the basis of numerous dance tracks and even wound-up as a glam-metal mashup. Yet through it all, it's remained as recognisable and brilliant as ever.

Doctor Who returns to our screens tomorrow on BBC One/BBC America/Space.

NEWS: New Green Lantern Trailer

The latest Green Lantern trailer is online now and... it doesn't look too bad. Personally I've always found the idea of the Green Lantern's powers a little hokey but - silly Gatling gun bit aside - it looks as if the movie may be going for a more realistic approach to the concept. At least, as realistic as a guy who flies and glows bright green can be...

Anyway, you can check it out for yourself over at Bleeding Cool.

Although no release date has been set, ''they'' - the omniscient Hyperminds of the Internet - are predicting a date of June 17th.

UPDATE: My posts are link-free and error-filled until I've had my coffee and Pop Tarts.

NEWS: X-Men First Class Trailer

We're probably a day or two little late bringing this to you, but frankly it's a slow news day and given that covering this wasn't exactly on the top of the That Figures To Do list, it's a good opportunity to kill two birds with one stone...

I'm still not sold on the concept and I wish they'd used the original, classic X-Men line up, complete with the proper apish Beast (instead of the silly blue-furred supercat) but this trailer is an improvement over the previous one.

X-Men: First Class hits cinemas in June.

NEWS: Glyos Bio Jumper and Kabuto Soldier Images

We've already seen the - now titled Bio-Jumper and Kabuto Solider - heads from The GodBeast in prototype form but now Marty (AKA The GodBeast) has uploaded a number of shots of the first production run of these awesome bug-headed buggers.

No word yet on pricing or when they'll be available but we'll keep you posted.
